What Is Snare Drum

Snare drum is a type of percussion instrument which is famous and well known for its powerful sound. These drums are played with a pair of drumsticks. These drums are actually used in orchestras, marching bands and many more. Snare drum is originated from Tabor drum and is specifically classified into three categories of kit snare, marching snare and piccolo snare.

Marching snares are the ones used in marching bands and they are 12 inches deep and 14inches wide. Piccolo snares are less in diameter when compared to marching snares and drum kit snares. So their pitch is high and creates a unique sound, but when these snares cannot be used to record effectively as their sound is sharp. Piccolo snares can include soprano snares, standard snares and popcorn snares. Standard piccolo snares are of 14inches in diameter while sopranos are 13inches in diameter making the popcorn snare drums very less in diameter which is 10 inches.

There are also tabor snares which are used for marching bands in wars in 14th century and tarol snare which is similar in dimensions to tabor and has snares opposite to tabor which are at top.
