Cymbal Tips for New Drummers

A proper cymbal can bring unique variances and tones to any drum kit. A cymbal can also establish or switch up the mood in a song through these variations in tone, making the cymbal an indispensable asset to your drum kit. The sound acquired from cymbals is a complex one, working in combination with the stick, brush or mallet you use to play it and the drummerโ€™s individual technique. Because the combinations of drum, stick, brush and mallet are practically infinite, you have a never ending repertoire of sounds right here at your fingertips.

Practice, practice, practice! Striking the cymbal is a skill in itself that takes a great deal of time to master. The angle at which you strike the cymbal can make a huge difference in the sound it produces. Never tighten a symbol too tightly on its stand, as that will effect its ability to vibrate, which will, in turn, have an affect on the sound the cymbal makes. Cymbals are susceptible to damage and wear via setting up, taking apart and playing the drum kit. You must anticipate that you will need to properly care for and maintain your cymbals in order to get the most out of them in the long run.
